Popcorn Sunday

At our house we have a tradition. It is this, the only meal we prepare on Sunday is the noon meal. Breakfast is always cold cereal and supper is always... well... popcorn! Of course any amount of left overs can be consumed as well and quite often we open a bottle of peaches as a treat, but popcorn is consistently consumed at our house every Sunday!

Chad loves popcorn and so do the kids. Even though I don't eat much of it, I do like to sample it a bit. I have to admit that the right combination of butter and salt gets me eating it almost without thinking. It is soooo good! Occasionally we get too much salt on a batch, and I tend to only sample those batches. However, salt is an interesting thing...

Salt doesn't really have a flavor, in fact if you were asked to describe how it tastes, you'd probably use a word like 'salty' which would never help someone who had never tasted it to have any idea of what to expect. Salt is actually something that we put on our food to make it more enjoyable. Salt actually opens up our taste buds allowing us to taste and experience the flavors of our food more deeply with every bite.

A few weeks ago, as Chad was making the traditional bowl of popcorn, he shared with me a thought about salt...

Religion is like salt. Particularly as we seek to learn and live the gospel of Jesus Christ. When we do this, our religious beliefs actually heighten our senses and make it possible to experience life to a deeper and fuller level. With a knowledge of the gospel, we have a greater depth of love for God and an inexpressible sense of gratitude for all our blessings. In essence, religion like salt, opens us up to the good in life. The more religion we apply the more the joys and delights of life intensify. Unlike salt, religion can never be applied too heavily. When we let religion become a part of us, we not only become open to receiving goodness, but we also share it with those we interact with. I am so thankful for my knowledge of God, and of His love for me and my family. We are so richly blessed and have been abundantly endowed with the joyful 'salt' of religion in our lives.
